feldspar glaze chawan

feldspar glaze chawan

Ø 12cm

this chawan has been fired in a saggar
with the addition of charcoal.
the atmosphere in the kiln was oxidising,
meaning that plenty of oxygen was available
for the flames to burn, but the charcoal,
combusting in a lidded container together
with the bowl, consumed extra oxygen and partially
changed the firing conditions to reduction.
this influences the colour of clay and glaze
in unpredictable and exciting ways.
the result are hues ranging from green to white
in the glaze and from yellow to chocolate brown
in the clay
